Skin 1 - 0 Yu

I kid you not. If there was such a thing as dermobipolarity, my skin's got it.

When I returned from Japan a week or so ago, I noticed enhanced dry patches around and on my nose, dehydration lines on my forehead and worst of all, excruciating stinging on my inner cheeks and around my nose. I slept with a Sudocrem halo around my nose for 3 days.

To give you a bit of background, my skin was already a drama queen as it was with my t-zone being both the driest and oiliest part of my face. How is that even possible, I hear you ask? God knows. I basically had dry patches in the same areas I got oily during the day - between my brows, around my nose, and on my chin.

So when this dermobipolarity hit (yep I'm usin' it), I was so confused. So I dug around my collection and consulted a lovely man at the Origins counter in John Lewis and had a mini skincare overhaul. And this is what resulted:

When I said "mini", I did mean "mini"..

First we have the cleansers - The Body Shop Vitamin E Cleanser and the Origins A Perfect World Cleanser. I like these equally, actually. The former is more of a traditional cleanser that you apply on a dry face, and it smells a lot like Nivea. I can really feel the hydrating effects of that and have been really enjoying it at night. Origins' A Perfect World is like a milder version of their Checks & Balances (which is what I use at my boyfriend's), and is more of a face wash that you lather with water and apply to damp skin. Now this I feel has more of a balancing effect of the oily and dry patches, and therefore something I aim to use in the daytime instead. Together, I'm hoping they set a good base for the following steps. (P.S. Origins have started to make mini travel sizes for the Olympics times, so if you ever wanted to try their products like the Drink Up Intensive mask or the Modern Friction exfoliator - now's the time!)

Then we have the toner - The Body Shop Vitamin E Toner. This is a strange toner. If you pour it out onto your hand, you can see it has a hint of viscosity unlike your average toner. I think this almost gel-like feature makes this product more moisturising than most other toners, and I've found it really nice and comforting on the skin. While the lovely Origins man suggested A Perfect World toner, I decided to stick with this one.

Serum. I've had crap experience with serums thus far, and this is actually the only one I've enjoyed - and even then, I'm not really sure if it's doing much. This is Caudalie's Vinosource S.O.S Thirst Quenching Serum. The concept is great and fit for my needs, but the actual product is just okay - so if this sample size doesn't last me, I'll be on the hunt. Any suggestions?

Last but not least, the Origins Make A Difference Skin Rejuvenating Treatment. This is a WEIRD texture. It's like a gel-balm! Either way, I feel this does a good job of sealing in the moisture from the last 3 steps, but whether it moisturises itself is something I haven't really figured out yet. But even that feature alone makes it quite good - but not sure if it's £32 good - we'll see!

Oh did I mention I'm still getting spots through all this?

I think Skin 1- 0 Yu about sums it up..

Has your skin ever had dermabipolarity?
Anyone have amazing product suggestions for dehydrated/dry skin?

*The Body Shop products were gifts with purchase.
*The Caudalie Serum was received for consideration.
*The Origins Make A Difference treatment was a sample from purchasing A Perfect World cleanser.

  1. The vitamin e toner is seriously one of my favourites :) not cheap but the Liz Earle Superskin range is great for dry/dehydrated skin, and the L'Occitane Angelica face mask is great too :) heard it's similar to the Origins one xxx

  2. I think recently my oily complexion has changed into dry complexion so there are many products which i have to swap in order to accomodate my troublesome skin! Its so strange because the Origins and Body shop cleansers have been exactly what i have been using to help my skin and i love them so much. They are so good for rebalancing moisture and doesn't leave my skin all dry and horrible. They smell amazing too :) The toner i love at the minute is the Lancome Tonique Doceur because its so gentle and doesnt irritate mys skin hehe. Thanks for reviewing your products for your skin xoxo

  3. I totally understand what you mean, I have dry patches on my oily forehead. I have been treating it as oily skin still moisturiser-wise, but using a creamy cleanser instead of a foamy one!

  4. Cetaphil moisturiser is one of best when your skin is really damage and sensitive to back balance to your skin.

  5. I used to have the driest skin in the world (until it decided to switch to the OILIEST skin in the world) to the point where it would just peel off my face all the time, not cute! Over the past few years I've discovered Aquaphor was the only thing that would help it heal over night. I would slather it on the areas that would be the flakiest before bed like my nose, chin, around the corners of my eyes and when I woke up it would be moisturized heaven! You need to be careful not to use it too long though (from the time I go to bed until the morning is only about 6 hours) otherwise I find it can leave be with a few white heads. Also, Bio Oil is GREAT for your skin. I never put it on before bed just because I don't want my pillow to be an oily mess, but I wear it while I'm doing my night time routine (around 3 hours total). It locks in moisture and as a bonus helps with any discoloration you may have from acne. I think if you use that in conjunction with Aquaphor you can clear up your dry patches for good!

Let us know how things work out xx

  6. Have you ever used the Benefit Foaming Facial Wash? That's the only wash that's ever properly worked with my skin - I don't get dry or oily during the day and I have combination skin too. I also use Boots Organics Rosewater Toner and S&G Clear Here moisturiser as it's not too heavy for me and it fights spots too! I use the Body Shop Vitamin E facial spritzer during the day for a bit of moisture and to set my makeup.
My skin is better than it's been in years by using these products :) I really hope you face manages to sort itself out! It's horrible when our skin decides to have a hissy fit :( Have you changed any products recently that could have caused it? Could you be allergic to something you're not aware of? x

    1. Nope I haven't at all :( It's really odd, it might be my diet change from being in Japan.. so glad to hear you are happy with your skincare, I look forward to being like that soon! :P I hope anyway! :P

  7. Honestly, Yu, the best thing I ever did for my skin was really simplify what I used. Switch to a mild cleanser (Cetaphil or Philosophy Purity)don't use any toner - even moisturizing ones are just introducing more stuff to make your skin go crazy. Just use AHA/Glycolic treatment during the night (if an overnight one like Ole Henriksen Invigorating Night Gel, and don't do like I did and pile it on; it worked so much better than me when I got to the end of the jar and was forced to use it sparingly and realized I'd made a pricey judgement call before)because this kind of treatment will help with both acne and flaky, dry skin. Then, probably all you'll need is your regular moisturizer in the day (and night over the AHA stuff if you're drier than me). Trust me, I'm a product lover, too, but the more is not the merrier with our skin!

  8. I also wanted to say Tiffany from Will Work for Makeup and http://tinyladylife.blogspot.com/ (not sure what her name is) are always suggesting skin care products that work for my bipolar skin! So if you don't read their blogs yet you might want to check them out :)

    1. Ah yes I read their blogs so I'll look through the old posts!

Oh I knowww I've tried stripping down my skincare products but it doesn't work for me at all. It goes mental without toner, and my Konjac sponge just isn't enough on its own.. but the Glycolic treatment is something I've been thinking about for a while, as many people have recommended it! I'm going to do some research! Thanks for your tip on the amount too, that's really good to know! The woman at my facial told me that naturally I have good skin so I don't need expensive products so to save on things like cleanser and moisturiser.. which is a good call I think! Thanks again you are so helpful :)

  10. I feel the craziness :( Serum wise I like the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, which sinks in really well but is nice and quite soothing, although pricey so worth trying a sample! Also Avalon Organics Lavender serum is lovely too, bit more moisturising and a lot cheaper, about 10 quid. I've just tried the Elemis Freshskin one (in Superdrugs) and that seems ok although I've only tried it once. I love Avene/Vichy/La Roche Posay for soothing products. Ponds is really moisturising too. For toner I really love distilled witch hazel- boots or wilkinsons do one, its like £2 and it's meant to soothe sore skin, it's lovely, I've been through about 4 bottles! It's not so good for cleansing but for soothing it's good. Go for alcohol free though as I've found alcohol ones sting :/ I also agree Cetaphil cleanser is really good. I'll stop rambling now lol! xxx

    1. Oh I meant to say the witch hazel is in the medical/vitamin section. Also the bar soap of the Vitamin E Body Shop cleanser is really good, perfect for a light morning cleanse. Ok really shutting up now! xxx
